in a western european museum, a protagonist examines paintings containing traces of gum arabic — a substance extracted from acacia senegal trees of north-western africa. summoning the ghosts of intermediary merchants, signares, women of the senegalese artistocracy who played a central role in the transatlantic trade of gum and gold from the 17th to 20th centuries.
